Implementing a traditional hardware function into software presents a powerful alternative that helps eliminate expensive hardware. An ADSL chipset using the TMS320C6x DSP as the ADSL engine is capable of supporting multiple channels of T1.413 full-rate ADSL. Since implementing G.Lite on the C6x will be less complex than full-rate ADSL, more functionality can be incorporated into the DSP. As ADSL modems become consumer commodities, chipset vendors will face price pressures that will eventually lead to consolidation of different components that comprise the chipset. A software implementation offers advantages of being a future proof-architecture and field upgradeable in the face of evolving standards. In addition, the system becomes more scaleable to support different bit rates. These factors translate to lower system costs for consumers and telecom vendors.
