Native Signal Processing (NSP) is an approach to signal processing in which some or all of the functions are executed in software by the PC's microprocessor.NSP is also referred to as Host Signal Proessing (HSP).The increase in the number of NSP solutions appearing on the market is largely a function of the price pressure that the market is currently putting on PC manufacturers.PC's today have more functionality at lower prices than ever before,therefore causing a profit margin decrease for the PC OEM's.OEM's are looking to offset this margin deficit by squeezing costs out of the system,a goal that is diametrically opposed to the fundamental rule of offering better performance and more features in each successive product generation.In order to solve this paradox,many PC vendors are looking at the PC host processor to provide more processing functionality.As host processors become more powerful and less expensive,and as more PC's are bundled with modems attached for connectivity,Native Signal Processing (NSP) becomes a viable approach to handlingcomplex control and signal processing applications such as modem communications.Native signal processing offers benefits to both system designers and end users,the most notable being the price advantage of host-based functionality.
