Quantification of Occupational Risk from Accidents

The risk of sixty three specific occupational hazards has been quantified. Probabilities foran occupational accident per hour of exposure and for a year of average exposure have been calculated.Three levels of consequences have been considered: fatality; permanent injury; recoverable injury.Data have been obtained from accidents reported over the Dutch working population under the Dutchlaw and for a period of six years. Exposure of the population to the hazards over the same period hasbeen estimated through surveys. Hazard ranking on the basis of quantified risk differs substantiallyform the ranking on the basis of the observed number of accidents.
