Nowadays, the systematic approach for protective relaying defect analysis has not yet been established, and existing defect analysis methods are not able to provide support for the protective relaying reliability improvement. In order to improve the reliability of a protective relaying system, a method to analyze and manage protective relaying defects is proposed. Firstly, a protective relaying three-dimensional defect model is constructed, which includes a three-dimensional architecture and the association models between different dimensions. Then a defect set is defined and the Apriori algorithm is used to mine the association rules in the defect set. Association rules are sorted into some typical problems by categorical analysis. Finally, the typical problems are mapped to the three-dimensional model, and their corresponding defect management strategies are obtained. According to the case study, the proposed method works well to analyze the defect and present the management strategy.
