In recent years, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission has increasingly shown its importance, which is widely used in high-power, long-distance transmission and other aspects. The development of HVDC transmission has a growing demand for the reliability and economy of HVDC circuit breakers. This paper studies the operation principle of self-excited oscillation-type (SEOT) HVDC circuit breakers and the influence of LC parameters on the turn-off speed of the circuit breakers. A simulation experiment is carried out on the two-terminal CIGRE HVDC transmission system by using PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the self-excited oscillation-type circuit breaker can successfully cut off the fault current in the HVDC transmission system. Impacts of LC parameters are also discussed by analyzing the simulation results.
