There is a need for greater understanding of atmospheric pressure plasmas, particularly of theboundary region between the plasma and the open atmosphere. The aim of this research is toinvestigate this boundary region with a combination of experimental techniques. This paperpresents the results of preliminary experiments performed using imaging and emissionspectroscopy. Spectra were measured in the flame region of a helium plasma jet operated in openatmosphere. Emission from atmospheric species as well as helium was observed up to several cmfrom the aperture of the jet.
