Results are presented from experimental studies of electrical and spectral characteristics of a'complete' and 'incomplete' leader discharges propagating along the surface of conducting water. Theelectron density (ne=1.5-3·10 17 cm -3 ) and temperature (Te ≈1-2eV) along the discharge channel havebeen determined from profiles of hydrogen spectral lines H α и H β broadened due to the Stark effect inthe plasma electric fields. The gas temperature in the cannel (Tg ≈5000K) was measured from a thermalradiation in the Wien region of the Planckian radiator spectrum. It is shown that the main parameters ofthe leader channel ne, Te, Tg vary only slightly along the channel length.
