In this paper, a new type of radiation detectorusing the Radiation Induced Surface Activation(RISA) phenomenon is introduced through somepreliminary tests. The RISA phenomenon, whichwas first studied by the authors, causes cathodic andanodic reactions by surface irradiation of oxidizedmetal with radioactive rays. One of the authorsfound the RISA current induced in rutile TiO2 filmfor the first time, and conduction current has alsobeen detected in some other oxide materials. Ourfeasibility study to develop the RISA detector forapplications in the fields of medicine, engineering,and physics, such as γ -, β -, and X-ray measurements,is introduced in this paper. The RISA detector hasmany advantages in comparison with conventionalradiation detectors, as shown. This sensor is verylight and small allowing the detection system to beminiaturized. The robustness under strong radiationand high-temperature conditions is sufficient tomeasure kGy/hr irradiation for several months. Thesimplicity of the system may reduce the cost forpractical applications. Besides, a coating of TiO2 onthe backing plate can integrate the circuit in one tip.These advantages lend a strong possibility that theRISA detector will have wide applications in radiation measurement.
