Two types of miniature relays have been developed based on conventional machining technology. One is a la-type 8 x 8 matrix relay, focused on miniaturization. By using design methods that simplify the structure and make it similar to that of microsystems, a relay 1/10 the size of conventional ones was achieved. The other type is a 2a-type 8 x 8 matrix relay that uses the same design method, but focuses on mass productivity and cost. It is 1/6 the size of conventional relays. Analysis of the electrical and mechanical interferences among the actuators in both relays revealed design guidelines for future microrelays. These relays will facilitate the development of a network control system with low power consumption and wide-band transmission ability.
