Domain Knowledge Driven FRBR and Cataloguing for the Future Libraries

FRBR or Functional Requirements for Bibliographical Records is a subject based taxonomy or classification of a library. It consists of entities, relationship and attributes that describe relations between textual, cartographic, audio-visual, musical, 3D visual and other types of media also accounting for editions and copies. An alternative way to discover the FRBR, one which is incremental and interactive rather than sequentially in execution, is presented. The concept of information relevancy is developed to implement the cataloguing philosophies of a given library and to address the ambiguities that become a feature of large-scale cataloguing systems. The case studies covered reveal the effectiveness of this approach to FRBR.
