As many electric power systems move towardderegulation, there is much focus on system efficiencyissues associated with the new system’s competitiveenvironment. Details such as energy trading, pricingefficiency and quality have been at the forefront of theseissues.The overall objective of the changes has been tointroduce competition wherever possible and to reduceelectricity prices by improving business processes andincreasing operating efficiency without compromisingservice quality and operative security.The shift to a market-based structure has alsonecessitated the unbundling of services by stripping outnon-energy costs and identifying ancillary serviceswhich have real costs and are of value.This paper focuses on aspects related to electricityutility deregulation in an operation system, consideringdifferent ways as to how ancillary services can betreated.
