The main purpose of this paper is to analyzethe role information plays in the new energy marketstructures that have been implemented worldwide.Economic incentive brings information to a newstrategic level for individual companies as well as forthe whole sector. In this scenario, new concerns stemfrom the advent of increasing variety and complexity ofinformation needs, together with its crucial role insupporting decisions. A brief analysis of the possibleimplications of extending open access to information ispresented. Indications are made about the opportunityfor fostering a whole range of service activities insidethe power sector, related to value added informationsupplied by specialized agents. Enabling technologiesare presented to help define applications that wouldprovide more consistent and readily usable information.
