The Autonomous Train: a game changer for the railways industry

This position paper presents the autonomous train project by SNCF and an overall view of its telecommunications requirements. The project is launched in 2016 within the innovation program at SNCF (Tech4Rail) to provide the French vision of the future railway system. The future railway system is based on automatic train control (ATC) system [1] made of three functional layers, i.e. Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS). SNCF is working on several use cases, combining ATO, type of infrastructures, Grade of Automation (GoA) and customer needs.
