Energy efficiency of low and medium power range electric motors is one of the major concerns in the present day world, since they contribute to a major portion of the energy demand. The motors in this power range are mainly used for domestic, industrial and irrigation water pumps. Usually, either submersible induction motors or permanent magnet (PM) motors are employed. However, the efficiency and cost of these motors, respectively is one of their drawbacks. In this paper, a 2-pole multi-barrier line-start synchronous reluctance motor (LS SyRM) is proposed for a 6-inch bore-well submersible water pump. Further, two new rotor geometries with high saliency are compared and analyzed in terms of their starting and steady-state performance using 2D-finite element analysis. Finally, one rotor model is adjudicated for the bore-well pump application.
