Mode competition and control for a vane-loaded gyrotron operating in TE02- mode at 91.4 GHz for its potential application in W-band deep space communication systems has been presented in this paper. Beam-wave coupling coefficient, and start oscillation current have been investigated for the desired TE02- mode and also for other competing modes. The study reveals that the main competition for TE02- comes from TE13+, TE31-, and TE41-. For typical vane-loaded structure parameters rv/rw=0.8, N=4, and φ = 45
