Construction Delay Study of South-to-North Water Transfer Project Based on Factor Analysis

Delays are among the most phenomena in construction industry. They cause not only the increase of construction cost but also the loss of business income in the future. There are many uncertain factors which increase risks in large-scale construction projects. South-to-North Water Transfer Project is a magnificent water diversion project which plays a significant part in our country economic development. This paper collects delay factors on the basis of questionnaire feedback from different parts (clients, designers, contractors, and consultants) that related to the project. Based on the data, the paper uses principal components analysis method in the factor analysis to simplify variables to several dimensions and find the main factors. We also do further research on the projectrelated, client-related and contractor-related delay factors respectively. The result indicates that many delay factors are correlative and the poor communication, client's unpractical requirement, delay payment to contractors, inadequate qualification and inexperience of contractors are important factors. It finds that the use of new technology and information should be enhanced and precaution measures should be taken to reduce the risks in construction delays.
