Simulation and Performance Analysis of Ad-hoc Networks Using NS-2 and NS-3 Simulators

An Ad-hoc Network is a collection of wireless terminals that are able to dynamically form a temporary network without any aid from fixed infrastructure or centralized administration. In this paper, we evaluate the throughput and received packet rate of wireless ad-hoc networks by simulations. We used network simulator version 2 (ns-2) and network simulator version 3 (ns-3) network simulators considering Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. We analyze the performance of ns-2 and ns-3 considering memory usage and runtime metrics. We also compare the average throughput, the average received rate and number of received packets for different area sizes and different number of nodes. Simulation results show that when the network size increases, the ns-3 has better performances than ns-2.
