The application of the theory and technology of 3D visualization in the cartography science promotes the evolution of the traditional, static and planar map toward the dynamical and three-dimensional map, which is becoming a new research field of Geographic Information System (GIS) and digital cartography. The study on digital map and database provides strong technology and abundant data resource for the research on 3D map. In this paper the constructing of digital elevation model (DEM) based contours and scattered elevation points, the modeling based on DEM and displaying of other elements of topographic map, such as block, street, residential area, vegetation, road network and water system, etc. are discussed. In additional, the establishment of 3D topographic symbol library, dynamical display of 3D model and overlay representation with orthographic image are studied. Finally, it is explored of the application of the 3D visualization technology in hillshading map, simulated flight, and virtual city, etc.
