A User Gaze Detection Based Approach to Squeeze Idle Video Traffic in Communication Networks

This paper proposes a user gaze detection based novel strategy to squeeze idle/inactive video traffic in communication networks. The strategy focuses on squeezing idle video traffic to save the wasted network bandwidth. Video stream on a consumer device is categorized as active or inactive on the basis of user gaze. A video stream is considered active if user's gaze is detected on that, but for the case when user's gaze is not detected, the video stream is considered to be inactive. Information regarding active/inactive video stream is fed back to the corresponding source. The source end intelligently saves the wasted bandwidth of inactive video stream by either reducing the quality of idle stream or by sending only audio throughout the idle duration. It is expected that significant bandwidth can be saved by applying the proposed strategy.
