Low Velocity Impact Damage Study on Sandwich Composites with Different Face Sheets

Different glass and carbon face sheeted foam core sandwich were manufactured and examined by means of an drop-weight impact test rig adapted with the data acquisition system for low-velocity impact behavior of sandwich composites. Glass plain weave fabric material and carbon plain weave fabric material face sheeted sandwich composites were manufactured using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding method. The energy levels of 2, 5, 10, 20, 30J were employed to conduct the low-velocity impact tests. The impact behavior demonstrated by the introduction of these face sheet reinforcement materials is evaluated and measured. The crack lengths of the impacted face sheet specimens are compared with different energy levels and different material face sheets. Results illustrate that the ballistic limit was enhanced for the sandwich composites by using carbon plain weave fabric as the face sheet material.
