Highly Oriented Mesophase-based Graphite (HOMG) tapes have been developed by melt extrusion throughslot-shaped dies with aspect ratios greater than 50, followed by stabilisation and further heat treatment. HOMGtapes exhibit transverse textures which vary according to the conditions. Layer planes may be orientedpredominantly parallel or perpendicular to the tape surface. In spite of large transverse area, the tapes, incarbonised form, have tensile strengths and Young's moduli of the order of 1 Gpa and 150 Gpa, respectively.HOMG tapes, heat-treated at 27002700oC, have a tensile strength of the order of 2 Gpa and show non-linear fracturebehaviour. The HOMG tapes have low electrical resistivity at room temperature and thermal conductivityapproaching 900WmC, 900Wm-1 -1K-1 -and display potential to be used as thermal management materials. The tapes arecharacterised by XRD pole figures and TEM.
