In this work, the possibility of chemical recycling of PET from mineral water bottles as an additive to a low-volatile bituminous coal for the manufacture of carbon materials has been studied. The addition of 10 wt% of the PET waste totally destroys the low fluidity which characterizes this high-rank coal. In order to study the degree of interaction between the high-rank coal and the PET waste during pyrolysis, thermogravimetric analysis was performed on the coal, the PET waste and the blends containing PET up to 50 wt%. Chars were produced by carbonization at 800 ℃ under nitrogen atmosphere in a horizontal furnace. For comparison purposes, the low-volatile bituminous coal was also oxidised at 200 ℃ for 24 h in order to prevent it from becoming fluid during thermal treatment in an inert atmosphere and the oxidized coal was carbonised under the same experimental conditions. All the chars obtained at 800 ℃ were studied by polarized optical microscopy and subjected to surface area measurements with CO2 at 273 K.
