Solid-phase immunoassay is an excellent method for the measurement of biological materials because of their high sensitivity and selectivity. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) and enzyme-immunoassay (EIA) used to detect the amount of progesterone have been widely used in recent years. These methods however, require multiple washing steps to remove free antigens from the antibody-coated solid phase, and hence it is difficult to make rapid measurements. Here we report a method in which antibodies to human progesterone are simply adsorbed to polystyrene (PS) latex particles, which are prepared by a new emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The assay consists of monitoring the increase in turbidity that results from the interaction of antibodies coated latex particles with progesterone at optimum conditions.
