The synthesis of geopolymers based on alkaline polysialate was achieved by the alkaline activation of raw minerals and silica fume. The in-situ inorganic foam is based on silica fume, an industrial waste, added to a solution containing dehydroxylated kaolinite and alkaline hydroxide pellets dissolved in potassium silicate. The foam was synthesized from the in-situ gaseous production of dihydrogen via oxidation of free silicon (present in the silica fume) by water in an alkaline medium. Considering its potential as an insulating material for applications in building geomaterials, this foam was used to make a wood-foam composite at room temperature. The composite's mechanical properties were studied in relation to its chemistry.
