Common methods used to start AC induction motors driving highninertia loads include across-the-line starting and reduced voltagenstarting by auto-transformer, wye-delta or resistor/reactor. Applicationnof these methods is generally well documented and understood. However,nwith the increased use of electronic soft starters and variablenfrequency drives, applications can be markedly different. This papernreviews the aforementioned methods and explains the benefits andnlimitations of each. The effect of high inertia loads on bothnacceleration time and motor heating is examined. A case history ofnstarting a centrifuge with an electronic soft starter is studied.nFinally, a comparison of all of the methods is presented withnrecommendations on choosing the proper starter given
