摘要

Creyke Road alongside Christchurch’s University of Canterbury carries about 14,000rnmotor vehicles and 900 cyclists per day, with about 1,500 road crossings by pedestriansrnon a typical university day. There are four other significant traffic generators on thernstreet. Over a hundred houses are located on the 1 km long street, which is also a busrnroute. Traffic speeds and volumes were a concern of all key stakeholders.rnThe Christchurch City Council’s “Living Streets” programme attempts to achieve a betterrnbalance amongst road users (such as pedestrians, cyclists and other traffic) andrnbetween road users and neighbouring development. As part of scheduled kerb (orrn“curb” in North America) and channel replacement on Creyke Road, it was decided tornintroduce the Living Streets philosophy.rnThe challenge was to develop a design concept that would maintain the road’s arterialrnfunction, yet would significantly improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists andrnresidents. The design narrows the road, removes a significant amount of on-streetrnparking, and provides cycle lanes, wide footpaths and numerous street trees. Threerncentral islands with trees at significant locations make it easier for pedestrians to crossrnthe road. Traffic speeds are expected to reduce, improving conditions for pedestrians, rncyclists and residents.rnExtensive consultation with residents and other stakeholders was undertaken to arrivernat the final design. Construction was substantially completed in September 2004.rnComprehensive monitoring was undertaken prior to construction to allow future study ofrnthe project, once traffic patterns have returned to normal, but follow-up surveys have notrnyet been done. Subjectively, the transformation of Creyke Road appears to be workingrnwell for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
