Down the years, the information industry has mapped out for itself the categories of information with which it is prepared to deal. It handles these categories reasonably efficiently. The initial impact of information technology has had little effect on this situation, though it has enhanced efficiency. However, the current categorisation of information may well change in the future as information technology develops. It is not yet clear that information specialists will necessarily be well placed to take advantage of such a change. If not, there are other groups which are competing to do so.
