In recent years, permanent magnet type stepping motors including hybrid (HB) type are widely used in many applications for their better efficincy. In HB type stepping motors, 2 and 5-phases are used respectivly for medium and high resolution purposes. Until recently, however, 3-phase HB type stepping motor has not developed in use except 3-phase VR type. AC motors or DC brushless motors in aiming high performance are mainly 3-phase type. Under such situation, 3-phase HB type stepping motor ~1)2) has developed considering strong demand of high performance stepping motor with low cost. On the other hand, the applications of stepping motor are mainly elassified as positioning and speed control As recnet trends, application of speed control is increasing such as the scanner-motor of copy-machine or drum drive of LBP, consequently demands of low vibration and low noise are increasing for stepping motor. Therefore, new 3-phase stepping motor having Ring Magnet (named RM for convenience) type rotor has developed with HB type lamination stator ~3)4)5). In this paper, advantage of 3-phase HB type stepping motor is reviewed firstly, and also, new 3-phase RM type stepping motor is introduced.
