A Case Study of the Effects of Platform SoftwareSelection on Information System Maintenance Cost

Enterprise search systems have been focused on since around 2005. However, therernare very few case-study reports/papers how to build enterprise search systems and how tornprovide their superior cost performance. We propose an importance of maintenance cost forrnsystem management, especially after system launch. Search engines, well known as Internetrnsearch, are generally employed as middleware of enterprise search systems. We tried anrnexperimental study of estimating the system maintenance cost, in order to validate ourrnassumption; the maintenance cost of enterprise search systems is based on an installation costrnof those middleware search engines whose main characteristic is said to be simplicity ofrninstallation. We employed multiple search engines and performed experiments. We acquiredrnresults that the maintenance cost required for the installation of search engines. The resultsrnconfirmed that our assumption is true to some extent.
