It was perhaps appropriate that the first session of this Workshop was devoted to optimisation techniques for persistent object systems. We have progressed to a stage where there are a number of operational persistent languages and systems. However, performance is becoming an important issue. It is encouraging to see a number of groups concentrating on this area and attempting to apply various optimisation techniques in order to improve performance. This is essential if persistent systems are to be accepted by the general computing community.
