摘要

South African commercial buildings consume approximately 15 800 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. Inefficient use of this electricity costs the nation millions of rands every year. With the continuing electrification projects, the demand for this electricity is becoming greater, creating the need for additional power stations. This is rapidly putting a greater strain on financial and environmental resources. This has caused the introduction of new tariffs that are now reflecting the daily costs of generation. The University of Natal has started a project that looks at active demand side management of the University's energy consumption. This paper deals with the findings and measures being taken, with particular emphasis on airconditioning requirements in a tropical climate.
