Introduction Coal gasification is viable for the large-scale production of H2, but there are still some challenges to be overcome before this technology becomes feasible for commercialisation. Considerations based on overall thermal efficiency dictate that the processes downstream of the gasifier should be coupled with a catalytic membrane reactor operating at temperatures of 500℃ and above. Gas processing involves the conversion of CO in the syngas from the gasifier to CO2 and additional H2 production via the water gas shift (WGS) reaction. However commercially available WGS catalysts are not capable of operating above 450℃. This project was therefore aimed at developing WGS catalysts that can operate at high temperatures.
