Introduction For environmental reasons the sulfur level of fuels in many countries must be reduced to 10 ppm [1,2]. To meet the stringent regulation of S content, even the highly refractory molecules such as dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) must be desulfurized. Because of big molecule sizes and the steric hindrance from the alkyl substituents, it is hard to desulfurize the molecules of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT using the traditional hydrotreating catalysts. Micro-mesoporous materials with proper acidity and open porosity were considered as the ideal catalyst support candidates for HDS of sulfur compounds with steric hindrance effect [3]. In this work, Beta-SBA-15 composite material was successfully synthesized and the catalytic performance for the HDS of DBT over the corresponding supported-NiMo catalyst was investigated.
