It is argued that multichip module (MCM) technologies, tools, andinfrastructures are still lacking, while monolithic VLSIs have continuedto progress for the past two decades, delivering greater functionalityand higher performance at lower cost. The author offers perspectives onthe performance and economics of MCMs and VLSIs. In particular, heexamines the dependencies and contrasts the competitiveness betweenthese two integration technologies. The analysis points to opportunitiesand action agendas for MCMs. It is concluded that the MCM is animportant system integration technology that, if properly utilized, canprovide significant added value. It should not be approached as a VLSIreplacement. Rather, it should be used as an important adjunct to VLSIs
