In this paper, we consider the use of multiple color filterapertures in an SLR digital camera to produce stereo imagesand to estimate the distance of objects within the fieldof view of the camera. Although such a configuration hasbeen proposed for auto-focusing, multi-focusing, and distanceestimation, here we develop the relationship betweenthe amount of color-shifting that occurs with off-axis apertureswith color filters, and derive a relationship that specifiesthe resolution of the distance estimates that are producedwith this camera. We also discuss an approach thatmay be used for distance calibration, and consider the feasibilityof using a two-color or a three-color filter apertureSLR camera in applications such as robot vision, humancomputer interfaces, intelligent visual surveillance, 3-d imageacquisition, and intelligent driver assistance systems.
