摘要

The City of Skagway, Alaska, responding to increasing visitor and tourist traffic, decided to build a timber bridge in the nearby abandoned gold-rush ghost town of Dyea. Locally produced Alaska Yellow Cedar, and recently developed stressed-deck technology meeting AASHTO and Forest Service criteria for stress-laminated timber design and construction were used. The stress-laminated deck is continuous for the full length of the 3 span bridge. Individual lams are staggered to distribute end joints. High-strength galvanized steel stressing rods "squeeze" the deck lams together. The two pier bents are conventionally driven treated wood pilings, while the abutments are rock-filled gabion baskets. The galvanized steel bridge railing is continuous with steel w-beam approach railing. This decay-resistant and good-smelling bridge will serve visitors to this historic area for many years to come.
