High Performance Computing for one of the Grand Challenges

The Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) was founded in 1964 in Heidelberg as the focal point of basic research on cancer in Germany. In 1975 it became one of the 15 big national research institutions. This includes that it is financed with 90 percent by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. Today there are more than 1.500 employees whereof biologists represent the biggest group of scientists. The amount of the institutional budget is about 160 million DM, enlarged by another 25 million DM of project grants.
