In today's dynamic and sometimes virtual environments, project development organizations must continually struggle to remain cost effective and efficient. One of the most significant and cost-driving phases of product development is product design. This paper briefly focuses on the need for more robust collaborative, virtual design environments, and some of the capabilities that will be needed to improve and shorten the product design process. The most common visual display systems presently available are: helmet mounted displays (HMDs), binocular omni irientaton monitors (BOOMs), Shutter (stereo) glasses with monitors, large projector based systems as developed in the CAVE Automatic Virual Environment (CAVE), and holographic imaging systems. The authors believe that through the use of one or more of these technolies, design teams can better share information, evaluate product designs, develop consensus, and rach more informed decisions regarding resultant product designs. U.S.Army and Univeristy of Central Florida researchers are evaluating the impact of different visual display systems on the task of collaborative design.
