Information Technology in Agriculture Sector

In the current scenario of globalization IT plays a very crucial role forrnproviding timely and required information in all spheres of agriculture. In therncurrent era of IT revolution the timely and quality information inputs inrnagriculture sector may prove as a boon to the farming community. The potential ofrnIT can be fully utilized in improving the efficiency & productivity of agriculture byrnbetter Soil Mgmt, Water Mgmt, Balanced Use of Fertiliser and adopting latestrnfarming practices. The e-revolution in the this area may lead to an overallrnqualitative improvement in way of life.rnThe paper mainly focuses on the current status of IT in agriculture sectorrnand presents the initiatives and steps taken by IFFCO, Phulpur Unit to supportrnand provide IT based services to farmers. A Touch Screen based system KisanrnSuchena System , has been developed which provides necessary information inrnLocal Language on Soil Analysis, Soil Micro Nutrient Analysis, Recommendationrnof Balanced Fertiliser based on soil condition, Recommendation of suitable cropsrnsuited to soil conditions. An effort is being made to maintain Data Bases, whichrncovers package and practices for major cereals, pulses, fruits, horticulture,rnfloriculture and animal husbandry etc. Efforts made by IFFCO alone are notrnenough to take of whole farming community. A Joint effort is required by likemindedrnorganisations related to agriculture sector to make a collective institutionalrneffort to harness to create the necessary IT based services to farmers.
