A Study on the Elevation Type of Yang-Lou House in Gulangyu (IV) : The Case Study on the Elevation Type Layout of Veranda

Veranda is the origin of western-style buildings in the modern China, and it is a characteristic of Gulangyu-style architecture. Under the interaction between historical and geographical factors, the elevation type matches the nature silent island perfectly, forming a unique landscape. As one of the series studies on the elevation type of Gulangyu-style architecture, this paper probes into the elevation type layout of veranda based on literature, interview, photos, and mapping data. The results of research are as follows: (1) There are two kinds of elevation type layout of veranda: flat arch and semicircular arch. The use of building material is closely related to the elevation type: most of mortared red brick verandas employ semicircular arc, while most of brick or concrete verandas are of flat arc. (2) The number of columns of a veranda, different from the room sequence of internal architecture, strengthens the indication and decoration of entrance, and the variant numbers of columns enriches the expression of elevation type layout. The elevation type layout of veranda of Yang-Lou has enriched expressions, and the room sequence mode and the use of building material enhance the visual rhythm. Such architecture, on the silent island of Gulangyu, presents a unique style and the mutual permeation of eastern and western cultures.
