Ternary composites of polypropylene/high impact polystyrene/inorganic filler (PP/HIPS/CaCO_3) were prepared to obtain synthetic paper and study their structure-property relationships. The composites plastic components were from municipal segregated plastic waste. Six ternary composite films with 10, 20 and 30 wt % of CaCO_3 in 60 and 70 wt% of PP were prepared in a single screw extruder with cast film matrix and axial stretching rate of 2 m/min. Film surface scanning electron micrographs, thermal, optical and mechanical properties were characterized in order to analyze surface morphology and filler dispersion/distribution, PP component melting temperature and crystallinity, film opacity and gloss, as well as tensile and tear propagation strength of the composite films, respectively. Results showed that CaCO_3 and HIPS affected differently most of the optical and mechanical properties, whereas thermal properties depended mainly on the relative amount of the filler plus the amorphous HIPS component present in the composite films.
