The non-ferrous metals industry is one of major industries in China which produces numerous wastes. China's non-ferrous mines, aiming at the environmental protection and improving their economic benefits, have paid increasing attention to wasteless mining or clean mining. This paper discussed efforts made by many small mines for clean mining and describes the new attempts made in the design of a large mine, Dongguashan copper mine. It is imperative to stress the need of planning at the beginning of project design and to incorporate the social and ecological factors into the economic evaluation of the project.
