The Sellafield legacy ponds and silos are plants usedfor the interim storage of untreated waste associatedwith first generation reprocessing of early militaryand commercial activities. Intermediate levelwaste (ILW), comprised of radioactive sludge anduranium-contaminated materials like Magnoxcladding, etc. have been accumulated in these plantsfor over six decades to keep them safely isolatedfrom the environment. In the early days ofnuclear power, there was no plan for furthertreatment, repackaging or disposal of this material.Only later that the problem has been acknowledged,plants designed to retrieve and process these wasteswere constructed.
