A numerical method is presented to determine specific heat and thermal conductivity of fire protection materials using temperature measurements. In this inverse analysis the direct problem consists of semidiscretized variational form of the heat conduction problem. The inverse problem is solved by means of two different techniques of constrained minimization. It is shown by a numerical examples that the methods can be potentially used to the solution of both the thermal conductivity and specific heat. The convergence of the predicted conductivity is examined from an illustrated 1-D case of a fire protected steel plate. Results of the simulated case show that good estimations on the thermal conductivity can be obtained. Comparisons with the accuracy of inverse methods used in the method NT FIRE 021 of fire protected steel structures are made.
