The Marquette Interchange, located in the midst of Downtown Milwaukee, has become the cornerstone of Southeastern Wisconsin’s freeway system. IH-94, IH-794 and IH-43 converge to form a vital link in the state’s economy and transportation system. Over 300,000 vehicles pass through the interchange daily. In an effort to keep as much of the interchange open during construction, a complex construction staging and traffic control plan is being successfully implemented. This complex staging, as well as the overall complex geometry of the system, required the designers to implement many innovative solutions.rnOriginally opened to traffic on December 23, 1968, the interchange is currently being completely reconstructed and reconfigured to replace the deteriorated and obsolete interchange. Construction began in early 2005 and is on schedule for completion in December of 2008. rnThe five-level interchange and legs in each direction are shaped by the numerous bridges and retaining walls. Accordingly, given the urban setting, an extensive Community Sensitive Design process was incorporated into the project design. The structure shapes and features reflect themes drawn from the surrounding community. Ultimately, the 8 high level curved system ramps will become the focal point of the interchange as they become a permanent fixture in the Milwaukee skyline.
