Foam in Porous Media

Foams are used in the production of petroleum and natural gas for several purposes: in drilling wells, in cementing piping into a well, in hydraulically fracturing the surrounding rock to give better communication with a well, and in lifting out liquid accumulated in gas wells. In all these applications, however, foam acts primarily in a flow channel (wellbore, hydraulic fracture) relatively large compared to the bubble size. In such cases foam can be treated as a homogeneous, albeit complex, fluid.
