A study was conducted to investigate the influence of oil lubrication on the friction and wear behaviour of quenched and ion nitrided Cr_(12)MoV mould steel. The phase structure of the nitrided layer was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Micro-hardness measurement was also performed. The tribological behaviour of ion nitrided and quenched Cr_(12)MoV mould steel under the conditions of dry sliding or oil lubrication were investigated using a ring-on-block rig. The worn-surface topographies were observed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the friction reduction and wear resistance of the ion nitrided specimens were better than that of the quenched specimen; friction reduction and anti-wear capacities of both specimens were significantly improved by the oil lubrication. Under the condition of a dry sliding, the predominant wear-mechanism is ploughing wear, while it was mild abrasive wear, under the oil lubrication.
