A range-independent shallow-water reverberation model based on normal modes has previously been developed. It can handle surface, bottom, and volume reverberation, and includes the effects of vertical and horizontal beam patterns. In flat-bottomed areas, by adjusting the scattering strength, and sometimes the bottom properties, reasonably good agreement with data has been obtained. However, most shallow-water areas show considerable depth variability, so the model has been extended for N by 2-D range-dependence using adiabatic modes. The range-dependent model is described, and calculations in some shallow-water environments are illustrated, including a comparison with data received on a horizontal line array.
