Decommissioning of Building 771 presented many challenges due to widespread plutonium and americiumrncontamination, hundreds of kilograms of plutonium hold-up, and unstable actinide solutions contained in process piping andrntanks. Numerous innovations and ground-breaking approaches, particularly nuclear component size reduction andrndecontamination of process equipment to Surface Contaminated Objects, have been developed that will result in cost andrnschedule performance improvements at the Rocky Flats project and elsewhere.
