MASS: Mercury Amalgamation Stabilization/Solidification

Traditionally, cement has not stabilizedrnmercury well. Mercury AmalgamationrnStabilization/Solidification (MASS) overcomesrnthis limitation through the use of a cement matrixrncapable of stabilizing soluble mercuryrncompounds and amalgamating-stabilizing agentsrnthat also stabilize elemental mercury. Therncombination of this matrix and these agents notrnonly stabilizes elemental mercury and itsrncompounds but also suppresses the vaporrnpressure of elemental mercury. This paperrnpresents the matrix and special agents tested forrnMASS, the resulting improvement in thernToxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedurernresults for soil spiked with mercury and purernmercury, and the effect of the MASS techniquernon surrogate sludge.
